Fethiye is an extremely attractive town set on the hillside of Mount Mendos, part of the Tourus mountain range, and surrounds a delightful bay to which it gives its name.
The mountain range gives a superb back drop to Fethiye. While sitting in the warm pleasant winter sun sipping your tea or coffee at one of the bay-side cafes, the mountains with their tree covered slopes and snow capped peaks, you might be forgiven for thinking you were in your own piece of paradise.
The summers in this region of Turkey are long, dry and hot with temperatures ranging from 30-40 C, while the winters are typically short, wet and warm with temperatures rarely falling below 10 C. With this climate it is possible to swim in the turquoise waters for around 9 months of the year.
Agriculture plays an important role in this area with its wealth of fertile land which means it doesn’t solely rely on tourism like many parts of the country. When the tourists season is over many holiday resorts become quiet and empty but not Fethiye where activity flows continuously for the 12 months of the year.
Farming for vegetables, cotton, sesame, tobacco and aniseed are major sources of income in Fethiye. There are also around 250,000 tons of tomatoes produced and exported yearly.
The seaport in Fethiye, with its sheltered natural structure, is an important stop for yachtsman. There is also a new modern marina project underway that will cater for a large number of yachts and many other added facilities. |
