Göcek is surrounded by many historical places of interest such as the ancient city of Kaunos and the ruins of five Lycian cities in the Xanthos Valley as well as many areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The Gulf of Fethiye was thought by the many frequenting sailors to come a close second to the Indian Ocean in terms of the stunning seascapes on offer. Until recent times there was a lack of land based options for those wanting to stay a while and enjoy an exquisite corner of the globe with the only real town to speak of being the delightful Fethiye. However, now there are a few more options available in the attractive village of Göcek.

Göcek with its large natural harbour has matured over the years to offer a lot more to those passing sailors and tourists alike. When visiting Göcek there is nothing better than to take a stroll around the marina and admire the many different boats of all shapes and sizes that are moored here. The waterfront around the marina is dotted with nice restaurants and little bars while set back from the marina life revolves around the market square where small shops sell antiques and local crafts as well as the usual Turkish carpets.

There is a small beach in Göcek that it is possible to swim from but you could also take a trip to one of the beaches on the local nature reserve or even a boat trip to one of the small, but beautiful, islands in the bay. This area might be known as the 12 Islands but there are many more than that. Some of the islands have a little restaurant for you to enjoy a tasty meal, some have ruins from the Byzantine era and others simply have nothing but peace and tranquillity.
